Marketing 101
Last year I was invited to give a presentation on marketing to the Rosalind Franklin School of Medicine and Science. I was advised I was addressing students; the information needed to be brief, and basic. Although this was “marketing 101,” and directed to new medical practices, this information may be helpful to your organization. Below are some key points from my presentation.
- Marketing is more than just advertising. It’s exposure and communication. It takes 5-7 exposures to make an impression. Don’t run an ad once and think that your marketing was ineffective. Once is not enough.
- Some of the ways you can reach your audience might include:
- Website – provide valuable information and become a resource.
- Print brochures – should be professionally written and designed. Brochures may be printed inexpensively and in small quantities at Resolution-Creative-Print.com. There is an online coupon for 25% discount on digitally printed brochures available until Dec. 31!
- Thought leadership – give presentations, write articles.
- Welcome packets – distribute your brochure to new members of the community. Depending on your industry, include price lists or a magnetic business card for the refrigerator.
- For existing residents, use Every Door Direct Mail, a service provided by the U.S. Post Office, delivering to every address in a targeted area. Provide the post office with your printed materials and the zip code where you would like to deliver.
- Host or sponsor events – become a recognized name in your community.
- Outreach with a newsletter – this can be an email or print newsletter.
- Social media – can be the hub of your outreach activities; posting articles, promoting events.
Use a variety of media for a multichannel approach. Plan it strategically; develop and include a marketing budget in your business plan.
